Last night’s meeting

There is not much to report from last night. But here is what you need to know about leaf pickup services, which begin Monday.

Every district will be picked up twice. District 1 is the first district to be picked up. These aren’t the same districts as your city wards (See map below). The service department requests that you keep the leaves out of the storm drains and off the street.

Roughly speaking, here is the schedule for the rest of autumn:

District 1  Oct. 31-Nov. 4, Nov. 21-23 (Short week due to Holiday)

District 2  Nov. 7- 11, Nov. 28-Dec. 2

District 3 Nov. 14-18, Dec 5-9

Last night’s council meeting

Here are my notes from last night:

Leaves and Candy – First, what most residents need to know:

1) Leaf pickup is being pushed back a week, because not enough leaves have fallen yet. We will begin picking up leaves on Monday, October 31.

2) Trick-or-Treat in Stow is Saturday, Oct. 29, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. As always, please leave your porch light on if you want to give out candy.

Fox Den – The Finance Committee approved an expenditure of about $19,000 to reconfigure two of the holes at Fox Den. According to a golf architect that the city engaged, Hole 5 is one of the worst holes in Ohio. Under this plan, Hole 5 (formerly a dogleg right) will be converted into a par 3. Hole 6 (formerly a short par 4) will be converted into a par 5 with a distance of 545 yards from the blue tees. This has been a good weather season for golf and Fox Den has been well manicured. This has led to solid revenue at the course, and perhaps a little profit to offset the $375K in debt service the city will pay in 2016.

Dispatch Discussion – I called another meeting to discuss the Stow/Falls/Tallmadge dispatch proposal. Chief among the topics was whether it is necessary to lease the Summit County health building–or whether a structure presently owned by one of the cities can be used. This is a fair question, because the absence of rent will help the COG financially on an ongoing basis. … I was pleased to hear that the mayors intend to give the city councils a review and approval of the major points in the bylaws. It is critical for council to assure the residents that the COG is accountable to the cities it serves–and the bylaws will be govern the COG’s operations.

Self-Storage Facility – Council approved by a 4-2 vote the construction of a self-storage facility on Allen Road–in our main industrial district. To me, this is not an appropriate use for this land that is so critical for the city’s economic growth. Brian D’Antonio and I cast the lone “no” votes here.

Next meeting – Council will meet next on October 27.
